Dan Gutman
Dan Gutman is one of my favorite authors of sports books for children of all ages. He has written quite a few both in the areas of fiction and non-fiction and at various levels of reading. You will see me posting quite a few of his books here. I hope you check them out from our very own Chapman Hill Library. Let me know what you think.
My Weird School #5: Miss Small Is off the Wall! by Dan Gutman
In this book A.J. and the other second graders do everything except play sports when they go to "fizz ed: class with their new teacher , Miss Small.
This is not my favorite My Weird School books but it is about "fizz ed" class. Check-out all the My Weird School books and tell me which is your favorite.
The Babe and Me: A Baseball Card Adventure. by Dan Gutman
With their ability to travel through time using vintage baseball cards, Joe and his father have the opportunity to find out whether Babe Ruth really did call his shot when he hit that home run in the third game of the 1932 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. I really liked how this book incorporated the actual photos of Babe Ruth. These photos made me feel like the story was a true story not fiction and our main character Joe was really traveling thought time.
Mike Lupic
Mike Lupic is the author of many sports books for young readers as well as teens. Click on the picture of Mike to see a Youtube video about the Million-Dollar Throw. I've not read this book but have it on my list of books I need to read.
Million-Dollar Throw by Mike Lupic
Eighth-grade star quarterback Nate Brodie's family is feeling the stress of the troubled economy, and Nate is frantic because his best friend Abby is going blind, so when he gets a chance to win a million dollars if he can complete a pass during the halftime of a New England Patriot's game, he is nearly overwhelmed by the pressure to succeed.
If you would like to know more about the authors below or see other books they have written click on their names to be linked to their homepage.
Owen Foote, Soccer Star by Stephanie Greene
Since we have been learning soccer skills, I decided to post a few of my favorite soccer stories. When eight-year-old Owen and his best friend Joseph join a neighborhood soccer league, they not only face a test of their game skills but also of their friendship. I like all of the book in the Owen Foote series so don't just read this one,check-out all the others as well
S.O.R. Losers by Avi.
S.O.R. Losers by Avi is an interesting twist on a sports story. In this book each member of the South Orange River seventh-grade soccer team has qualities of excellence, but not on the soccer field.
K is for Kick: a Soccer Alphabet by Brad Herzog
I had the privilege of meeting author Brad Herzog, my last year as library media technology teacher at Harritt Elementary, just over the hill from Chapman. You will love this nonfiction book and will recognize many vocabulary words and skills as what we covered in class. This book examines the history and lore of soccer from A to Z. The worst part is you will have to ask the librarian to order it from Harritt or look into getting it from the public library as Chapman's library doesn't have a copy.
The Million Dollar Kick by Dan Gutman
Last but not least one of my all time favorite soccer stories has the main character as a girl. Boys you will enjoy this book as well and girls it is a must read sports book for all of you. Thirteen-year-old Whisper, who hates sports, is torn when she gets a chance to win a million dollars by kicking a goal against a local soccer hero. The worst part again is you will have to ask the librarian to order it from Harritt or look into getting it from the public library as Chapman's library doesn't have a copy.
With Veterans Day just past, I thought I would suggest two of my favorite books for this holiday time. Both will need to be ordered from another school as Chapman Hill doesn't have either.
